Coronado is a Charming Island......
of contented residents boasting all of about 27,000 persons. Coronado has become a growing vacation mecca over the years. Since it is a hometown town, vacation visitors are limited to certain areas that have a greater number of second home rentals available, such as Coronado Cays and Coronado Shores Condominiums. Of course, this little city is proud of the three world class hotels, the fabulous old lady on the ocean, The Hotel Del Coronado, the city and bay views of the Marriott, and the secluded and charming on the bay Loew's Coronado Bay Resort.
Coronado, once reached by ferry, is now accessed by the azure arch of a spectacular bridge which views all of the "island" from the top span approach. This island community lies across the bay from the fine city of San Diego. It has wide, sparkling white sandy beaches, a picturesque yacht harbor, public tennis courts, and an 18-hole golf course, some of which borders the bay. There are many excellent restaurants and delightful little shops to browse as well as walking tours by historic homes.
Coronado, as we know it today, had its beginning in 1884 with the arrival of Elisha Babcock of Evansville, Indiana and H.L. Storey of Chicago. These two financiers came to San Diego hoping the climate would help their poor health. A favorite pastime of theirs was to row across the bay and hunt rabbits on Coronado's brush-covered areas. Together they conceived the idea of building a resort hotel on the island that would attract people from all over the world. In 1885, they formed a syndicate and bought the property called Coronado Beach Island for $110,000, once a Spanish land grant.
In March of 1887, work began on the construction of the famous Hotel Del Coronado. It took one year of concentrated effort to build the original 400 room structure. The Chart House Restaurant was a practice project to teach imported labor the construction techniques for the hotel. You will see that there is not a nail used in the magnificent gum wood vaulted ceilings in the lobby and Crown and Coronet dining rooms. Because of a labor shortage in San Diego, carpenters were brought in from San Francisco and from far-flung railroad construction sites in the West. Six years after completion, the hotel had the distinction of becoming the world's first hotel to have electric lights. The installation was supervised by none other than Thomas Edison.
A few blocks from the Hotel Del Coronado, on Star Park Circle, is a charming yellow house often occupied by Frank Baum in writing his famous Wizard of Oz books, and who reputedly modeled his Emerald City after the Hotel Del Coronado! A city of fresh air, nature, charm - an "island escape!

- A prestiguous community, envisioned and developed by Signal Oil, Landmark Development Co., that began its construction in 1969 and completed in 1995. Located four miles south of the famous Hotel Del Coronado on the Silver Strand Highway. "The Strand" is a narrow band of wide sandy beach that links Coronado to the mainland.
- The Cays is comprised of "Villages" that are exclusive to their own groups of residences and not intermixed by traffic from other Villages. Each Village has access to a club house and pool, and the Montego Condominiums are gated. Boatslips are available with many properties as water rights in title, or available to lease. Tennis courts, open space for activities and dogs, city fire department and security patrols complete some of the amenities offered.
- A very fine hotel, The Loew's Bay Resort, is on an adjacent peninsula to the Cays project. The Loew's features an exceptionally pleasant atmosphere with fine dining and over 400 rooms or casitas on the bay. The Loew's offeres discounts to Cays owners, features a Saturday Farmers Market and hosts many popular activities for adults and children. Christmas is a traditional Dr. Seuss affair.
- The Cays location is on lovely San Diego Bay, but across the Strand is the Pacific Ocean, wide quiet beaches and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.
