In 1902, the famous Hotel Del Coronado closed for renovation and handled the summertime flow of eager vacationers by establishing a charming array of tents to cottages extending from the hotel to the present Naval Amphibious Base. Affectionately known as "Tent City", it was indeed a small city with entertainment, plunge, concessions and a magnificent floating dance pavilion on the bay.

In 1933, with approaching war, an era ended. This acreage remained dormant until 1963 when it was purchased and development plans began. In 1970, the first of ten high rise buildings broke ground, and to be the only high rise buildings in Coronado.
